It is great to be able to share with you updates from our alumni community. It’s been a blockbuster few months for loop+ (Cohort #3), who have experienced some amazing momentum.

loop+ is an activity tracker for wheelchair users that assesses risk and monitors prescribed care plans in everyday life. This year, the demand has continued to snowball for loop+, having clinics pre-ordering to ensure they are first to have loop+ in their clinics.

loop+ is now registered as a class one device in Australia with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

Kath Hamilton, CEO of loop+, talked about some of their recent achievements.

“Over the last few months we’ve been overwhelmed with clinicians demand for the loop+ platform to give them visibility into their clients’ everyday life. We’ve learnt there is a demand for more additive revenue streams with incremental services and devices. Recently we had our first expo, the ATSA Independent Living Expo in Sydney. We are thrilled to have 12 clinics, Westmead Hospital and the Assistive Technology and Seating [AT&S] clinic sign up to test loop+. We estimate this could expose loop+ to over 2,000 wheelchair users in NSW from just these clinics. This is a critical milestone as expos and conferences is one of our key channels to acquire customers through clinicians. Gives us great confidence in our forecasts and our market fit.”

This July, loop+ will be picking up the pace for their field tests, with the next release of the loop+ platform. With their eye to their largest market, Kath is currently touring the US to understand how they can efficiently scale the great interest from several clinics across 3 cities into a full blown commercialisation plan.

Meet our Mentor, Stephen Ruffels

Stephen Ruffels, mentoring NomadVR, has been in medical product development for almost 15 years. Watch his video to find out more about Stephen, and why he wanted to be a Remarkable mentor.

Tell us a bit about you and your background experience.

Hi, my name’s Stephen Ruffels. I’ve been in medical product development for nearly 15 years. This ranges from patient engagement apps on your mobile phone, through to the more serious end of class three, life support ventilators.

What are your core areas of expertise, particularly when it comes to mentoring for Remarkable?

Understanding the regulatory pathways for different markets and understanding how to navigate those complexities and how to balance the need of all the users when you are developing your solutions.

What inspired you to become a mentor for Remarkable?

For me it’s a chance, as I’m sure a lot of mentors would say, to give back to apply the years of medical device development I’ve got, so we can turn these awesome solutions from the startups into a commercial success and start helping people a lot sooner. I’m also a big believer in disability tech. I think there are going to be some sectors where disability tech paves the way ahead of med tech mainstream. I also heard the Remarkable team are kind of amazing to work with…and I was not paid a cent to say that!

What do you like about Remarkable?

I really love the fact that there’s entrepreneurs in residence as part of the program. It’s going to make a real difference to hear from those who have trodden a similar path and going through similar struggles. So I think that’s a really big plus.

What is your top tip for early stage startups?

Test your assumptions as early as possible with real users. It’s going to save you a lot of pain down the track.

Getting to know Mentor, Ben Grozier

Hear from Ben Grozier, a lead mentor this year for BookBot. Ben is co-founder of ClassCover, and this year joined the Charles Sturt University, ATI Riverina Ready To Launch Pre-Accelerator as their Entrepreneur in Residence; is working with Fusion Labs in collaboration with the Catalyst Lab Innovation Project to assist in building out of education technology solutions conceptualised within NSW Department of Education Schools; and became a mentor for Remarkable.

Hey everyone my name’s Ben Grozier from ClassCover and it’s an absolute pleasure to be asked to be a mentor for the Remarkable program.

Tell us a bit about you and your background experience.

I am the founder of ClassCover which is a relief teacher booking application that saves schools vast amounts of time booking and managing their casual teachers. We also have an education platform for our 85,000 casual teachers which allows them to do cheap online professional development to help them stay accredited in what can be sometimes a bit of a tough environment and we have about 2,200 schools using the system.

What are your core areas of expertise, particularly when it comes to mentoring for Remarkable?

I’ve gone in my adult life between being a teacher I’m still a qualified teacher. I’ve owned and operated small businesses and then finally for the last seven years I’ve founded and built ClassCover to where it is today so that means that I’ve done some sales, I’ve done marketing, I’ve built products, I’ve done customer support, and run teams, and as you can imagine, when you have a startup that’s seven years old and and a team now of about twenty-two people that over the course of those seven years, you end up doing most of everything.

What inspired you to become a mentor for Remarkable?

My partner Ali is actually a program manager for the early childhood early education program at Cerebral Palsy Alliance and then I had a whole lot of different connections one via Ben Reid (Remarkable Entrepreneur in Residence Cohorts 1-3), who I’ve known for a very, very long time and I’ve always enjoyed both working with him, and his company and I’ve also, as an educator and as someone who has basically my whole family working in the additional needs sector, the disability sector, my mother was a teacher of children with additional needs right back in the 70’s and she did that right up until the late 1990’s. Of course Ali, my partner, she’s an Occupational Therapist and she’s worked in the disability sector for a long time now.

What do you like about Remarkable?

I just love getting back into this environment. At ClassCover, we’ve sort of been, I guess sort of navel-gazing a bit the last few years and getting back into this startup environment it’s just so cool, the energy of the people, the new ideas and the different ways that people are going about things when it comes to solving problems and bringing tech solutions to the disability sector – so yeah really cool thing.

Anyway, looking forward to working with the startups throughout the rest of the accelerator and again it’s a pleasure to be here. Thank you.
