The Problem

3.9 million Australians are living with severe or profound disability, 289,000 have difficulty holding or gripping things and more than 411,000 are living with dementia. People with dementia often have have difficulty with cognitive sequencing, impulse control, and verbal aphasia, making a conventional smartphone, tablet, or home voice assistant impossible to successfully navigate. Dexterity challenges such as shaky or unsteady hands also make it hard to operate a smart device. As a result, more than 1% of the population can't call their loved ones, and this increases their risk of loneliness and isolation.

The Solution

The CareWindow automatic benchtop videophone makes video calling accessible for people with cognitive barriers, mobility challenges, and sensory or dexterity limitations. Our combination of three important design features: automatic answering, a rugged spill-proof and fall-resistant chassis, and "lockout" settings to support people with impulse control disorder, makes CareWindow uniquely suited to connect family members of all levels of ability, overcoming the problems imposed by dementia or unsteady hands.

Hi, I’m Zac from CareWindow.

We’ve created a videophone so simple that even someone with dementia can use it.

CareWindow is the solution for people who can't use modern technology due to cognitive or dexterity impairment. At the moment people living with these disabilities can easily become disconnected, isolated and alone.

This is more than 1% of the population, virtually everybody knows someone in this position. We enable the moments of everyday connection which light up people's lives.

This is my Dad Martin - who showed me and my family the problem firsthand. He went into aged care in 2020 at the age of 67 after a stroke-like attack took his ability to walk, his ability to use a remote control, and his ability to use a phone. He experienced two very common dementia symptoms: sequencing difficulty, and impulse control impairment, among others.

I went looking for a solution. Nothing suitable was around. Every option had too many buttons and too many steps.

I discovered that 1 in 3 people in aged care (and more than 1% of the global population) just can’t use a smart device, for reasons similar to Dad’s - so solving this problem would be commercially viable.

I put together a team to solve this, led by myself as an experienced engineer, and Fiona, an aged care worker, nurse and masters in law. We’ve delivered significant projects together including the Royal Flying Doctors Electronic Health Record and I’ve delivered retail projects at-scale. We’re a proven quantity.

Our device works for people like Martin. It's a unique purpose-built videophone with several key features:

- High end audio capabilities, works from across the room

- Very Larger rubber feet, drop and splash resistant

- It features a camera with privacy swivel

- Automatic answering

- And importantly: it's universally accepted in aged care and other care worker environments

There is a significant market for this, and we can capture a valuable portion by moving quickly. More than 4.5 million individuals  in Australia, Canada, US and UK who we are relevant to.

There is no product quite like this, we are desperately needed. Other solutions exist but don’t solve the problem set that we do, they don’t suit some of the most common cognitive impairments associated with dementia especially sequencing difficulty and impulse control.

We benchmark “willingness to spend” from the mobile phone industry. People have the money, and they spend it - just often on a product which doesn’t work for them. I think everyone knows the story of buying a phone for an elderly relative only to see it unused.

We're on the market now and we sold more than 200 units in just a few short months we're selling direct to consumers online and through specialist retailers.

Independent testing results and public user feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Our direct to consumer sales are growing week on week. The market loves the product and many of our sales are word of mouth from existing happy customers.

We’re scaling up our rollout through a combination of in-person and online activation and demo events. We get amazing results from Facebook alongside conference and mall activations. OTs and families are our best advocates.

We have active trials running in seven aged-care facilities right now, poised to turn into bulk deals. We have other in-pipeline distribution deals through major retailers like Star Pharmacy Group (who have more than 70 outlets across Australia). This combination of B2B bulk deals and national retail reach along with heavy brand awareness campaigning will further accelerate our sales growth.

We are thinking big- we are going to become the phone for people who can't use a phone.

Following our aggressive rollout strategy we will become ubiquitous. Then we’ll charge a fee for access to the platform to providers, for example physiotherapists, speech pathologists and other telehealth providers can access the platform to reach customers they wouldn't otherwise. These will be very select value-add providers and will magnify their reach our unit economic stack

Our unit economics stack, with 2/3rds gross margin, and at least 1/3rd net profit on unit sales. In addition to hangsell unit sales, we create significant recurring revenue. We’ve calculated that 25% of our unit sales will be on a lease basis due to the short term consumer need and to ensure we cover areas of lower affluence. We also have premium subscriptions for care provider organisations, and families, in a similar value-add model to the well known “Ring Doorbell”.

We’ve created strong barriers to entry by creating unique value offerings in partnership with existing, established market players. Eg. CareApp, with 10% of the aged care market on their platform already, or NeoCare with AI driven fall detection tech.

We’re also uniquely eligible for Home Care Package and NDIS with providers advocating on our behalf for other exclusive marketplaces like Geat2GO.

We are focused on delivering ultimate ROI for our investors through a trade sale deal to an established electronics industry or care industry player.

We’ve identified prospective acquirers already and are readying our approach strategy, having already begun these conversations.

We're looking for people who can help accelerate our growth, especially occupational therapists or nurses in leadership who understand our products straight away. We're also looking for introductions to strategic investors and product journalists who can help us get the word out there.

If we make the world work for people with disabilities, it will work for everyone.

Thank you for listening.
