7 startups in 7 (working) days | Maslow

For our third day of 7 startups in 7 (working) days, we’re delighted to present Maslow, a company that started Remarkable, with little more than an MVP and have since proven that their product and business model works for their customers. Throughout the 16-week accelerator program, they secured their first 16 paying customers, had four independent therapists actively referring clients to Maslow, and are about to start their first paid pilot with a major rehab clinic.

Maslow is a voice-enabled home care and rehab assistance for people living with paralysis and was founded by a team of therapists, product designers, and young people with the lived experience of our user base to address this issue. Over the next six months, the team is focused on reaching 500 more paying customers through direct marketing campaigns and securing more partnerships with rehab clinics and Disability Support organisations.

In addition to sharing these pitches and to mark the conclusion of our accelerator program, our EIR Alan Jones has taken the time to reflect on the incredible work out #SYD20 startups have done to create such remarkable pitch videos like the one above. Check out what Alan had to say below.

I’m not going to lie to you: large teams, and teams that met at university? That’s two marks against you among the sceptical, shop-worn, battle-weary startup mentors I hang out with when I’m not at Remarkable. We snicker over our full ashtrays and empty whiskey glasses when we see a large team, because we think: blurry role definitions, slow to make decisions, hard to convene the whole team. We snort when we see teams that met at university because we think: too green in the ways of the world, too idealistic, too likely to pursue a noble cause rather than focus on sensible commercial goals.

Well, maybe it took a tiny bit longer than I’d like to persuade you to work smarter on winning sales, but let’s put that down to the challenges of lockdown. Because in all other respects I was wrong. You’ve been productive, you’ve been disciplined on defining your roles and your commitments to the program and the team. You have pursued a noble cause, but you’ve also willingly put your noses to the sales grindstone and secured a pipeline of customers and potential customers that you can now use to grow the business.

From the beginning, you’ve been fluent and confident in pitching the vision for the product and the business and it’s so great to see the business gain traction, beginning to show that it will catch up with that vision and drive it forward. You’re a talented team with all the latent skills and abilities you need to succeed.

Words by Alan Jones (the nice one).
